Australia has an Illiteracy Problem and we Want to Be Part of the Solution

Australia is a wonderful country to live in. So wonderful in fact, you’d probably be surprised to learn that we have one of the highest illiteracy rates in the world. As of 2016, 44% of Australian adults lacked the literacy skills needed for basic day to day activities. It can also be said that 1 in 3 Australian’s are likely to be deemed unemployable due to their low literacy skills. Considering the fact every child in Australia has access to schooling, these statistics are very alarming!

Being able to read makes the world of difference

It is easy to take your ability to read for granted, which means it’s even easier to be unaware of the positive impacts being able to read can have on a life. Literacy and education make an even bigger impact in third world countries. This is because education and literacy have the power to reduce poverty by increasing economic growth. It also has the power to improve health, promote gender equality and peace.

We know that the phonics-based approach can be part of the solution

As parents ourselves, we wanted to ensure our children wouldn’t become part of another set of illiteracy statistics. When the phonics-based reading approach worked for our families, we developed a passion for creating fun and engaging decodable readers we could share with parents and children around the world.
